The 27th of November is Black Friday this year, and it is also Buy Nothing Day. Buy Nothing Day is celebrated in over 65 countries worldwide, and it is a way to bring the capitalist consumption machine to a grinding – if only momentary – halt. This year in Lincoln I am planning on not only taking part in the lack of consuming, but I am also going to protest at the WalMart on 27th and superior. The idea is that we will all be wearing shirts, or have signs that say something along the lines of "Buy Nothing" ( Don't be afraid to get creative ) Our goal is to alert people and spread what is true.

I'm also going to have 50 or so copies of A Civilians Guide To Direct Action with me hopefully. I was thinking if you guys could either come, and bring some LUNK fliers, or something like that I could insert them with the Civilians Guide To Direct Action and hand them out together.

Help spread the word!

Unfortunately, I will be out of town. I am interested in preparing those fliers for the occasion though.

Alright, as long as you I can get them some time before that day it would work.

Also, I think it's a good idea to see how other people in the community are responding to the idea.

I could only take about two pages of that thread. It's appalling that a "Nebraska DIY" forum would have so many right-wing idiots.

As for the Buy Nothing Day event, I support the idea. I've practiced it for several years now, excepting a few groceries I've had to buy over the last couple of years. I'm not sure how successful the idea has been in practice, though, as it's pretty hard to get people to rein in their consumption on the biggest sales day of the year.

One last thing: I'm not sure if advocating shoplifting is the right approach, either. If you're going to hand these out in the Wal-Mart parking lot, they may have pretty good legal cause to get you run off the property.

"Let us not, however, flatter ourselves overmuch on account of our human victories over nature. For each such victory nature takes its revenge on us. Each victory, it is true, in the first place brings about the results we expected, but in the second and third places it has quite different, unforeseen effects which only too often cancel the first. The people who, in Mesopotamia, Greece, Asia Minor and elsewhere, destroyed the forests to obtain cultivable land, never dreamed that by removing along with the forests the collecting centres and reservoirs of moisture they were laying the basis for the present forlorn state of those countries. When the Italians of the Alps used up the pine forests on the southern slopes, so carefully cherished on the northern slopes, they had no inkling that by doing so they were cutting at the roots of the dairy industry in their region; they had still less inkling that they were thereby depriving their mountain springs of water for the greater part of the year, and making it possible for them to pour still more furious torrents on the plains during the rainy seasons. Those who spread the potato in Europe were not aware that with these farinaceous tubers they were at the same time spreading scrofula. Thus at every step we are reminded that we by no means rule over nature like a conqueror over a foreign people, like someone standing outside nature – but that we, with flesh, blood and brain, belong to nature, and exist in its midst, and that all our mastery of it consists in the fact that we have the advantage over all other creatures of being able to learn its laws and apply them correctly." -- Engels, Dialectics of Nature

Oh I know advocating shop lifting isn't the right approach. These won't be what I'll be handing out and what I will hand out will have nothing on it about stealing.

The first 2 pages of the nebraskadiy thread are probably the worst, after that more left-minded people started to post. I just think it's good to see the arguments local people have made, and to keep them in mind too.

This is the flier that we will be handing out. If any one plans on coming you could print some out, I don't have much printer paper.

Just curious, how did this go?
